After his playing career, Shelby went on to coach in the major leagues. He has coached for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, the Baltimore Orioles, and is currently the outfielders coach for the Milwuakee Brewers. 2 of the teams he has coached for he was once a player for that organization. He has a family full of baseball players. His oldest son John Shelby III, born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 6, 1985, was a high school standout in baseball. He graduated from Tates Creek High School in Lexington, Kentucky. He won the Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior in high school in 2003. He attended the University of Kentucky from from 2004-2006 where he excelled as a wildcat in his 3 seasons, being a 2-time second team All-SEC, even earning an opportunity to try out for Team USA. He was drafted in the 5th round of the 2006 amateur draft by the White Sox. Baseball America (a sports magazine that covers baseball at all levels and brings attention to up-and-coming players ranging from high school to international players) named him the best athlete of the 2006 Chicago White Sox draft class. In his career as a professional baseball player, he hit .265, had 732 hits, 90 homeruns, 394 RBI's (runs batted in), and 124 stolen base in 733 games. His second oldest son Jeremy Shelby was born in Los Angeles, California on August 14, 1987. He attended Grambling State University. He was drafted in 2010 in the 38th round by the Baltimore Orioles, the team that drafted his father. He is currently playing for the Bluefield Blue Jays, an minor league team affiliated with the Baltimore Orioles. The third oldest is JaVon Shelby. He graduated from Tates Creek High School (just like his older brother John). He is currently a junior at the University of Kentucky where he was named to the 1st team All-SEC Freshman team in 2014. John T. Shelny Jr. is the uncle of Josh Harrison. A professional baseball player that plays for the Pittsburg Pirates. Harrison was drafted in 2008 in the 6th round to the Chicago Cubs. He was named to the major league All Star team in 2014 and in the same year earned the Heart & Hustle Award (an annual award given to the player that best embodies the value, traditions, spirit of a baseball player).
